Think before you write for California Bar Exam

It is easy for everyone to find outlines of different legal areas in the market, or full sample essays from other books, but a book showing you how to change your ways of thinking, organizing and analyzing is more important for passing the bar exam.

Hiring a private tutor to teach you one-on-one is helpful but it would be very costly, and could be unaffordable to people working at minimum wages. Instead of endlessly blaming the examination system or the graders, it might be more helpful for you to figure out your own problems first, before reading pages of excellent essays, or continuing to recite the long outlines for different areas of law.

Hellas Leung was a Chinese TV news anchor and reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost two decades. She graduated with two bachelors‘ degrees in Journalism and Psychology at San Francisco State University in 2000. 

She went to the law school in 2014 and graduated in 2019. Later, she passed the California bar exam in July 2022 and sworn in at Santa Barbara to be a licensed attorney in California.

Hellas Journey

Hellas has worked for many different professions in order to understand the fun and pain of people in different industries. When she was a secondary school student, she worked as a tutor for students at lower grade, and also an actress for TVB and ATV in Hong Kong between 1992 and 1994.

When she was going to the university, she worked for the morning news for the Chinese Radio at San Francisco Bay Area. Right after her university graduation, she worked for KTSF 26, a Chinese TV news channel in the Bay Area.

Before she passed the bar exam, she also worked for marketing and insurance profession, as well as a non-profit organization helping low-income families paying their utilities bills.

After she has become an attorney, she starts working for a non-profit organization helping evicted seniors and families to stay inside their houses. She helps preparing legal documents for court trials and translating for clients and attorneys.

It’s still two years out for me to take the California bar exam, but it’s never too early to start “bar prep.” As the author puts, bar exam is not only about memorization and writing perfect rule statements (although these are important, too), it’s more about your mentality, skills, logics, etc. This book fills the gap where a lot of other resources fail to address, and I have learned a lot from reading Leung’s perspectives. It’s an easy read, not stuffed with difficult words; and most important of all, it resonates with my personal experiences too. I’m also from Hong Kong and I started law school in my late 30’s. I want to pass the bar exam (two years later) so bad that I have purchased so many study materials that I’m not even able to read them through. I didn’t have the time to put into study last year in my 1L but I managed to pass the school’s final exam, however, I know it’s not going to work this way if I keep my old approach. Leung’s publication is a valuable resource that lays out the roadmap for students who struggle, no matter in terms of organization, time management, writing skills, whatever. This a great book, it shows in simple words how to attack each subject in a very unique perspective. If you have failed or if you are afraid of failing, I advice you to get this book, because you either going to see your own mistakes explained and how to correct them, or you are going to learn a lot about someone else's mistakes (good to don't have to make it yourself huh), this good is about strategy and mental mindset, which is vital for the Big Exam (aka the bar). Compared to other states Bar exam, CA bar exam’s essay is very important to the final passing score. This book gives you hints on the way to finish a passing score. I love this book because I wrote four essays in this book and author did give the feedbacks on my writing strategy and critical thinking skills. Unbelievable I passed the CA July 2023 bar exam ! I paid $9 for the Kindle version, which is 100% worth it. The author has given detail about her experience of failing the exam. I have read the book and learned from her mistakes. I will adopt her experience when I take my examination in the near future. What I like about her book is that she gives lots of examples on how to attack essays. Trust me, it is well worth it.

Her advice, tips and strategies are welcome lessons to those who are taking the Exam for the first time or Retakers. Above all, she emphasizes the personal approach derived from truly knowing what works for you and how best to acquire the skills to pass. I highly recommend this book.

We need to analyze in essays. But what is an “analysis”? I did not realize until I met Hellas. 

From what I have learnt from Hellas, an “analysis” is more than just mentioning the facts. Facts are ingredients and the rules are the backbones for essay writing; the way to use the facts and rules to resolve the legal problem is an “analysis” and the method we use to write essays is known as IRAC. 

My previous mistakes were merely stating the rules and showing facts relevant to the rules. Then what I wrote were lists of definitions plus matching facts.  But how they were related to the call of the questions? I had to figure out before I started writing.

Before you figure out the next exam date, you should first figure out your writing problems. If you can figure that out yourself, that is the best; but if you already failed multiple times, please be realistic! Get a tutor to read at least one of your essays.  I would recommend Hellas. She would give you feedback on every paragraph you wrote, telling you which sentences are necessary and which sentences do not serve any purposes; instead of merely offering a few words of comments at the end of an essay. Her detailed feedback would be helpful for students who score 55 or 60.

Moreover, many people who speak English as their second language always lack confidence in writing essays, but the ways Hellas showed me how to write made me realize that spotting big and trivial facts in the essay questions, and then explaining the situation comprehensively and also resolving the legal problems, are far more important than if I have used the best vocabulary to describe a certain situation. Please do not allow languages to be your barrier in passing the bar. The so-called barrier is more about psychological than a real one.
